Sea defence works at Uitvlugt exposing community to risk of tidal flooding

A section of the Uitvlugt seawall on the West Coast of Demerara is currently being undermined due to ongoing sea defence works and the erosive effects of the ocean.

In a video which was seen by the Sunday Stabroek yesterday, seawater can be seen profusely overtopping the seawall and eroding the soil behind. This in turn results in water accumulating in an area which was being dug by an excavator.

The resulting erosion caused by the consistent overtopping

Both the overtopping of the seawall and the sea defence works potentially pose a serious threat of flooding to those residents in the area as well as in other villages along the West Coast since the area is known to be easily flooded by heavy rainfall and high tides.

It is unclear if the relevant authorities have taken any measures to prevent the flooding and how soon a solution can be implemented to curtail the ongoing soil erosion and avoid the seawater from accumulating on the land.
