Police urge relatives to formally identify dead prisoners

Six of the 17 prisoners who died on Thursday during the Georgetown Prison fire have so far been formally identified by relatives and the Guyana Police Force is seeking to have the others done in an effort of facilitate the autopsies.

Those identified so far are Sherwin Trotman, Anthony Primo, Andrew Philander, Randolph Marques, Dellon Williams and Jermaine Otto.

Therefore, the families of Kirk Clarke, Latchman Partap, Aaron Eastman, Rohan Teekaram, Hillary Amos, Rayon Paddy, Clifton Joseph, Shaka McKenzie, Chetram Dwarandat, Asraf Mohamed and Richard Hubbard are asked to visit the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Eve Leary or CID, Brickdam to formally identify their remains.

Although the dead men were positively identified by prison officials, it is a requirement that their relatives formally identify their remains in order for a post-mortem examination to be conducted.

Several other prisoners were injured after fires were started during a protest at the Georgetown Prison on Thursday morning.

The fires were started by inmates housed in the Capital Offences section of the prison during renewed unrest, which occurred just before 11 am. At the time, members of the Joint Services were seeking to get the prisoners out in the wake of a protest the night before, where several fires had also been lit.

It is believed that the men either burned to death or died from smoke inhalation.
