Sales rep in police custody after $3M robbery

A man, who was supposedly the victim of an armed robbery committed yesterday during which $3 million was carted off while he was making a deposit, is in police custody.

Stabroek News understands that the incident occurred around 10 am yesterday at the Ramada Princess Hotel, while the man, a sales representative attached to Supreme Petroleum and Lubricant Supply located at Ogle, East Coast Demerara was in the process of making a deposit of $3 million at a Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry (GBTI) branch. The money was received from customers.

According to reports, two men, one of whom was armed with a handgun, approached sales rep while he was sitting in the bank waiting to conduct the transaction and held him at gun point. He was relieved of the cash and the men escaped. However, an alarm was raised some two minutes after the incident.

A reliable source informed this newspaper that the matter was being treated as a staged robbery after CCTV footage that monitors the bank was reviewed. He remained in custody up to late last evening.
