Strength and Conditioning workshop set for April 1-3

A Strength and Conditioning workshop will be hosted at BE Fitness (Tower Hotel) on April 1-3.

The workshop which is a collaborative venture undertaken by National Sports Commission (NSC), the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) and the Guyana Amateur Weightlifting Association (GAWA) will be conducted by Dr. Kyle C. Pierce-Associate Professor of Kinesiology – Louisiana State University.

These and other details were discussed during the launch of the event yesterday at the Tower Gym.

In the words of GAWA General Secretary, Seon Erskine, the purpose of the seminar is to offer to all Physical Preparation Coaches, Fitness Enthusiasts and Educators within the Exercise Science Field, the opportunity to be educated and/or upgrade their knowledge at a training seminar on contemporary principles of Strength and Conditioning.

Erskine stated that the seminar was by no means just for weightlifting. “It is for every single trainer out there,” he stated adding that…“The aim is to launch a National Strength and Conditioning Coaching Industry so persons can become recognized and certified.”

This was reiterated by Assistant Secretary/Treasurer of the GOA, Dion Nurse.

“Strength and Conditioning is not just for one discipline but for all disciplines and the GOA and its members are honored and happy to be onboard and we are hoping from this initiative, we are taken to higher ground.”

Director of Sport, Chris Jones stated that the initiative is in keeping with the NSC’s calendar of activities with regards to the ’50 Shades of Games’. He then revealed that both practical and theoretical components will be conducted by Pierce hence, all participants are expected to wear sporting attire and be ready to participate fully in all activities.

Possible topics include: Lifting Techniques (basic lifting, Olympic-style lifts, dynamic lifts and assistance lifts). Planning Training (Bioenergetics, over training, periodization of training and recovery).

Training youth, anti-doping, nutrition and other topics will also be discussed.

Registration concludes tomorrow and the cost is $1000. Sessions will be conducted from 08:00 – 13:00 hrs. and 16:00 – 21:00 hrs. daily.
