Crabwood Creek farmer, 78, murdered

A Crabwood Creek farmer was found dead in a hammock at his home around 21:30 hrs on Tuesday with visible marks of violence about his body and his shotgun missing; the police have since held three men.

The body of Khublall, 78, of Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, was discovered by relatives who live nearby.

According to information gathered, the dead man was discovered by his nephew-in-law, who lives nearby. A neighbour said that Khublall’s nephew-in-law, Turbo, would call out to Khublall every day as he passed his house on his way home. On Tuesday when Turbo called, no one answered.

The neighbour said this seemed strange to Turbo, since his uncle would always respond. According to the man, Khublall’s gate was also opened which raised another red flag, because the gate was always closed. The neighbour said Turbo went to his house and alerted him and he then went next door, along with Turbo and his wife, to see what was going on. It was then that they found Khublall’s body in the hammock. The man said they sounded an alarm and the police were summoned.

According to Khublall’s nephew, Seepersaud Persaud, he was returning home from a mela held in the village, when he saw police officers at his uncle’s residence, but had no idea what was going on at that time. He said he was told by officers that his uncle had been discovered dead.

Persaud recalled entering the yard and seeing his uncle lying dead in the hammock. He said there was a visible plastic string around Khublall’s neck, suggesting that he might have been strangled along with two cuts on his forehead.

According to Persaud, Khublall was alone at home, since his common-law wife is on vacation in Suriname.

According to the police, three men are currently in custody and the investigation into the murder is still ongoing. Khublall was the holder of a licensed shotgun, which is missing.

Another neighbour said that the day before Khublall was discovered dead, she recalled hearing him say that someone had gone into his yard and left his gate open, but nothing was missing. She also mentioned that a few times in the past Khublall had lost items which he had left in his yard.

Neighbours complained about the bushes surrounding the area, expressing their fear. They said that most of them are farmers and they would go to the market early in the morning to sell their produce. They are pleading with the relevant authorities to clear the bushes as soon as possible.
