Stabbed vendor still critical

Michael April, the vendor who was stabbed to his neck three days ago, remains a patient in a serious condition at a city hospital; he is unable to move the upper left side of his body and his family is hoping that this is temporary.

Twenty-eight-year-old April of Lot 137 Section ‘C’ Enterprise, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) on Friday evening after he was stabbed to his neck by another man during an altercation. He was taken for emergency surgery that evening and was up to mid-day yesterday waiting to undergo a CT scan.

According to reports, the incident occurred around 11 pm while the injured man was walking along the Public Road at Melanie Damishana, ECD with his fiancée Nickici Cort. An argument developed after the assailant referred to April using a gay slur.

The assailant remains on the run.

Speaking to this newspaper yesterday, Cort said she and April were heading to a nearby shop to make a purchase, when the suspect who was liming at the corner of the road hurled abuse at April. She said April turned around and said, ‘Don’t get disrespectful,’ and before either party could have said another word he was stabbed.

“He hold onto he neck and say baby I will need to go to the hospital and by time I watch, I see a set of blood pouring out so I just take a rag to try stop the blood,” Cort said. She added, “Is a man did passing pick he up and take he to the hospital because it had a set of people around and they refused to take he I don’t know why.”

She said that at present his condition is listed as critical. April is also unable to feel or move his entire upper left side body. “He can’t feel on the hand or move it and we don’t know if it’s shock he get on that one side or what it is,” she lamented.

She said she is determined to get to the buttom of the matter since it was unclear what caused the assailant to take such a brutal step. Cort said of April, “He always smiling, it could be what anybody tell he just always happy.”

Another family member who was present described the suspect as a “trouble maker” while stating that he had previously stabbed someone else but was not apprehended by the police.
