Rakesh told Stabroek News that one of the two bandits, who were armed with handguns, walked straight up to him and demanded his bag full of jewellery. However, Rakesh said after he refused to let go of his bag, the second bandit shot his son in his jaw.

The bag was handed over and the bandits got away with approximately $7.4 million in jewellery.

Rakesh said the men were not masked, while eyewitnesses noted that they arrived on a motorcycle.

A police source revealed that one person is currently in custody.

According to Rakesh, after selling in the market for over 15 years, it was the second time he has been robbed in the last five months.

Ronald currently attends the Fraser Educational Institute at Fort Wellington and has been getting ready to sit the upcoming Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examination.

His father said it is unclear whether the bullet is lodged in his son’s jaw. As a result, he is due to undergo a CT scan tomorrow.
