Young people who have gone into local government should be congratulated

Dear Editor,

It is with a sense of profound pride that I take this opportunity to publicly congratulate all those young people who took the oath of office as mayor, deputy mayor, chairpersons, deputy chairpersons and councillors in their respective towns and neighbourhood democratic councils.

Their elevation to these offices speaks volumes about the confidence their respective constituencies as well as their political leadership have in them. Equally it places a heavy responsibility on them to work in uncharted waters to deliver benefits to the electorate.

Most importantly, however, it gives all of them an opportunity to restore hope that with opportunity and a conducive environment young people can provide quality and competent service-leadership.

As they go down this new road of a political career they should not lose track of who got them there, what is good for those that put them there and most of all, their standing in the community beyond this election cycle.

Their election and selection are a clear indication that the advocacy of many who entered the arena before was not in vain. Once again, congratulations.

Yours faithfully,
Bevon Currie
