Black Sharks devour Hardliners to lift title

Fyrish Black Sharks romped to the Berbice Amateur Basketball Association (BABA) sanctioned Anamayah Memorial Basketball Championship title, dismantling Ithaca Hardliners 80-20 on Sunday at the Fyrish Court.

Eventual Most Valuable Player (MVP) Linden Joseph alongside Joel Fraser led the rout with 22 points each. Contributing in the ‘blow-out’ victory was Tafawa Dary and Keenan Williams who netted 14 and 10 points respectively.

On the losing side no player reached double figures, with the best scorer being six points in the form of Phillip Edwards. Chipping in with four and two points was John Collins and Kester Sinclair correspondingly.

Clinching their berth to the final following a 54-46 semi-final win over Rose Hall Town Jammers, the home side seized the early advantage as they raced away to a 16-6 lead at the end of the first encounter.

The contest was basically sealed in the second period as Black Sharks netted 23 points while restricting their the visitors to an abject two points to enter the half time interval ahead at 39-8.

Upon the resumption the carnage continued as they outscored Hardliners by a 27-6 margin to head into the final stanza leading 66-14.

The score line was sealed in the final quarter as they outshot Hardliners 14-6.

Due to the result, Black Sharks copped the championship trophy and a cash incentive while the runners-up received the respective accolade and a cash incentive.

On the individual side, Joseph collected the MVP accolade.

The event which was played in an initial round-robin format, featured initially eight teams divided into two groups. Group-A consisted of Fyrish Black Sharks, Rose Hall town Jammers, Canje Knights and Rose Hall.

On the other hand, group-B comprised of Ithaca Hardliners, Hopetown Steelers and New Amsterdam Warriors. During the latter stages, Smithfield Rockers had withdrawn from the championship.
