Teen remanded for a day over cell phone theft

A teen was remanded to prison for a day after he pleaded guilty to stealing a cell phone.

The court heard that on April 24, at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, Lavar Moore, 17, stole a Blu cellular phone worth $20,000 from Ron Peters. Moore admitted to the charge, when it was read to him by Magistrate Alex Moore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.

According to Police Prosecutor Sergeant Simon, the virtual complainant was on his cell phone, when the defendant who was with some other boys rode up alongside and snatched the phone out of his hand. The boys rode away and the complainant gave chase, catching the defendant and recovering his phone.

Moore pleaded with the Magistrate to have leniency on him, since it is his first offence.

However, bail was denied by the magistrate until a probation officer can properly evaluate the case. Moore is expected to return to court today.
