West Ruimveldt resident remanded over cell phone

A West Ruimveldt man was remanded to prison by a city magistrate after he was charged with stealing a cellular phone and cash.

Kenrick Cozier stood before Magistrate Annette Singh who read a charge which stated that on December 12, at Water Street, that Cozier, in the company of another, robbed Trebhuvan Kaladeen of a $40,000 Blackberry cellular phone and $2000 in cash.

Cozier, 24, pleaded guilty with an explanation to the offence.

The prosecutor stated that on the day in question, the complainant was walking along Water Street when he was approached by the defendant and another individual, and asked for $40,000, to which Kaladeen refused.

The complainant was then braced by the defendant from the side on the shoulder bag he was wearing, and felt the defendant push his hand into his pants’ pocket, while the other person attempted to do the same.

Cozier relieved the victim of the items mentioned in the charge, resulting in a scuffle between the two, while the second individual escaped.

When asked what his explanation was for stealing the items, the defendant said he didn’t steal the said articles, and only pleaded guilty with an explanation, to be able to explain himself.

A not guilty plea was then entered on behalf of the defendant by the magistrate.

He was remanded to prison and the matter adjourned to December 28.
