Cougars continue surprise run to reach Mayor’s Cup quarterfinals

Cougars, Ann’s Grove and Winners Connection became the first teams to seal their berth to the quarterfinal in the 22nd Mayor’s Cup Football Championships, following hard-fought wins on Sunday at the Victoria Community ground.

Berbice unit Cougars continued their surprise run in the event after edging East Coast of Demerara unit Beterverwagting (BV)/Triumph United 1-0. Sherwin Parris settled the matchup with a 16th minute strike.

Meanwhile, Ann’s Grove finally recorded a positive result against fierce rival Grove Hi-Tech, defeating the East Bank of Demerara giants 1-0 compliments of a Narvado Denny strike in the 66th minute.

On the other hand, Linden outfit Winners Connection downed home side Victoria Kings by a 2-0 score line. Rawle Gittens and Harold David were the difference on the night as they found the back of the net in the 27th and 32nd minutes respectively.

The event will then continue on June 19th at the Georgetown Football Club. In the opening fixture at 17:00hrs, the Guyana Police Force will lock horns with Eagles FC of Linden while the second contest will pit Riddim Squad against Uitvlugt from 19:00hrs.

In the feature contest of the night, Western Tigers will match skills with Den Amstel from 21:00hrs. Winner of the event will receive $700,000 and the championship trophy compliments of Aruwai resort while the runners-up will pocket the package of $300,000 and Ansa McAl trophy.

The third placed finisher will receive $200,000 and the corresponding John Fernandes titled trophy while the fourth placed unit will receive the package of $100,000 and the Ministry of State accolade.

Similarly, the victorious side will receive hampers donated by Ricks and Sari. On the individual side, the event’s top scorer will walk away with a three piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon Furniture Store.
