Man charged with wounding another at Essequibo camp

A 52-year-old man was yesterday granted $500,000 bail after being charged before a city magistrate with unlawful wounding.

Walston Boodhoo appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan accused of unlawfully wounding Jai-Gopal Singh.

The accused was not required to enter a plea in relation to the incident that allegedly occurred on June 14 in the Essequibo area.

According to the prosecution the accused and the defendant are from the same area and are known to each other.

The court was told that on the day in question, Singh was at his camp when the accused arrived and an argument ensued over money.

It led to a scuffle between the two and Singh was stabbed twice in his abdomen.

The prosecution further stated that Singh was still to undergo surgery and was receiving threats via his phone.

Chief Magistrate McLennan, after considering all that was stated, granted the defendant $500,000 bail.

The defendant was also ordered to stay 50ft away from the complainant and placed on a bond to keep the peace until the completion of the trial.

The magistrate then told the defendant that if he was sending threats to Singh or causing anyone else to send threats to desist from doing so.

June 29 is the next date for hearing and the case was transferred to the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.
