Anthony powers way to sixth win of season

Michael Anthony powered to his sixth win of the season yesterday, out sprinting a star studded field in the seventh annual Seven Seas Multivitamins and Dr. Chase Nerve Foods 35-mile road race at West Demerara.

The Team Evolution wheelsman took pole position in one hour, 20 minutes and 48 seconds to cap a dominant weekend for the premier club on the local circuit.

Anthony, 19, led national road race champion, Geron Williams and 2014 road race champion, Hamza Eastman  onto the podium of the grueling, rain soaked event which pedaled off at Wales Police Station, proceeded to Uitvlugt (via Parfaite Harmonie) and ended at the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

Raul Leal (Team Evolution) who won Saturday’s main event in the National Park, placed fourth. Shaquel Agard and Stephano Husbands rounded out the top six.

Despite the inclement weather, the race was a scorcher. Littered with several attacks especially from Husbands, the event was hyper competitive.

The riders stuck to the script and most of the starters were still bunched together with about 200m from the finish. As expected, a fierce sprint ensued but the tireless Anthony proved he had the freshest legs to steal the show ahead of Williams by two bike lengths.

It was Team Evolution’s 20th win in 23 races so far this year.

The cycling season continues today in Linden with the annual Baker’s Memorial Cycling Classic. (Emmerson Campbell)
