Man dies after Moruca River collision

An elderly man died following a boat collision in the Moruca River, North West District on Saturday morning.

Police Commander of ‘F’ Division Ravindradat Budhram said the dead man has been identified as Neville Friends. No age or address was available when Stabroek News spoke with the commander.

Stabroek News learnt that the boats were travelling in the opposite direction at 99 Turns in the Moruca River when the collision occurred.  The  injured man was rushed to the Kumaka District Hospital and died as a result of injuries sustained while receiving medical attention.

According to Budhram, the police have taken statements from the captains and a file is being prepared for legal advice. The captains, he said, remain in police custody.

A resident of Moruca, Yvette Vieira described the turn as a very dangerous part of river. She said “when you reach that part it’s like you have to take your heart out and place it in your hands.” When boats turn on the river they would often navigate on the sides.

The resident called on the government to dredge the turn as it would be a safer way for them to travel.
