WICB owes a duty to India to field the best team

Dear Editor,

For at least the last decade or so India has been among the most important cricket countries both in terms of the quality of its cricket, and its contribution to the financing of international cricket and cricketers. Indians, for several years have been trying fairly to compete with the West Indies and Australia as the country that has made the greatest mark in modern international cricket.

Less than two years ago the WICB broke an agreement with India by cancelling a very popular tour of that country. The generous Indians have forgiven the breach of contract and already are on the shores of the Caribbean, the eighth or ninth ranked Test country for a four Test series. Doesn’t the WICB owe a duty to India to put its very best foot forward by effectively promoting the series, selecting the best possible teams and making sure that the games are run efficiently?

What gives people like Cameron and Courtney Brown and their acolytes the right to foist on the Indians a second or third rate team to satisfy the vindictive instincts of themselves and West Indians of a similar disposition?

If the Indians sought my advice I would say to them, once you are satisfied that the best team is not being selected by the West Indies, just go home.

Yours faithfully,

Romain Pitt
