Suspect in fatal beating of Belle West mechanic surrenders

The hunt for the suspect in the fatal beating of mechanic Yugeshwar Shiwcharan ended yesterday after he turned himself over to the police.

This is according to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, who told Stabroek News that the man, who has been identified as Anthony Jhagroo, 20, a labourer of Lot 494 Belle West, West Bank Demerara, surrendered at the La Grange Police Station yesterday.

His mother, sister and sister-in-law, who were arrested on Monday morning, have since been released.

Shiwcharan, also known as ‘Shah Rukh Khan,’ 31, of Lot 485 Belle West, was beaten with a piece of wood just minutes before midnight last Wednesday and succumbed to his injuries around 11 pm on Sunday.

He sustained severe injuries and was admitted in a critical condition at the West Demerara Regional Hospital prior to his demise.

Stabroek News understands that Shiwcharan was a known alcoholic and was on medication for an illness he was diagnosed with a few months ago. Additional information revealed that prior to the beating, he had suffered a seizure.

This newspaper was told that hours before, Shiwcharan had started to behave unusually in his home in the presence of his wife. As a result, the woman locked herself in her bedroom. He then stripped off all of his clothes and made his way to his neighbour’s premises. The suspect then attempted to get Shiwcharan out of the yard and he allegedly dealt him several cuffs and kicks about his body. The now dead man subsequently left but returned some two hours later. He was confronted and a scuffle ensued and he was badly beaten about his body. It was at this point that the suspect’s sister alerted Shiwcharan’s brother, Maneshpaul, who picked him up from the roadway and took him to the hospital.

The police are awaiting the results of a post-mortem examination, which is scheduled to be conducted today, before charges are laid.
