Three held over Nigg robbery

Three men have been arrested in connection with the attack on a Nigg South, Corentyne, Berbice family, during which gunmen threatened to shoot a toddler.

Commander of ‘B’ Division, Ian Amsterdam, confirmed the arrests to Stabroek News and said that the men in custody hail from Hampshire and Belvedere.

According to Amsterdam, although three men have been arrested, special attention is being paid to one of them.

He, however, emphasised that the investigation is still ongoing.

The men were held after a gang of five masked men robbed the Kamalall family, who operate the Chill Grocery and Parlour, located at Lot 195 Nigg South, Corentyne, on Wednesday evening.

The attack occurred at about 7.40pm as Dharma Devi Kamalall was about to close her business.

Dharma Devi Kamalall had told Stabroek News that two of the men, armed with cutlasses, tackled her husband, Nandeshwar, in the front yard, while the others, armed with one gun each, jumped over the shop counter and demanded cash from her.

During the attack, the gunmen chucked Kamalall’s three-year-old daughter and threatened to kill her. Kamalall’s 12-year-old daughter then dropped to her knees and pleaded with the men not to hurt her family.

The attack has caused the family to question whether to continue with their newly opened business.

The men escaped with cash, mobile phones as well as large quantities of cigarettes and phone cards.
