Why shouldn’t we be proud of our world famous rum?

Dear Editor,

Some reactions, both objective and unduly personal, appear to have missed the essence of my letter clarifying that rum does not equate alcoholism. Also overlooked is the important issue of national pride in a legal Guyanese product which the rest of the world raves about.

If the Scots can revere their Scotch whisky, the French their wines, the Russians their vodka, the Germans their beer, the Mexicans their tequila, etc, why can’t we Guyanese be proud of our world famous rum? Of course we, like all others, must do our drinking responsibly and in this regard we all have a moral responsibility.

Yours faithfully,

Nowrang Persaud
