The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) yesterday ordered an inquest into the death of Tactical Services Unit (TSU) Special Constable Akeem Hyles, who drowned during a trip to the Kaieteur Falls three months ago.
This is according to Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum who informed Stabroek News that the advice was given yesterday afternoon.
The inquest is expected to begin soon and it will determine the circumstances surrounding how Hyles met his demise and whether anyone is criminally liable.
The body of 22-year-old Hyles was retrieved on April 12, four days after the boat he was in capsized in the Amatuk Falls area, Potaro River.
At the time of his demise, he and eight other policemen were accompanying other Joint Services personnel and officials of the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) to the area on an operation to halt illegal mining at Kaieteur National Park.
A post-mortem examination revealed that he died as a result of drowning.
At the time of the mishap Hyles was not wearing a life jacket which is a mandatory requirement when travelling on the country’s waterways.
