Fire leaves Manchester family homeless

A fire of unknown origin gutted the house of Imelda Chesney of Lot 1 Manchester, Corentyne, Berbice yesterday.

The fire has left a mother, her husband, daughter, son and two grandsons homeless. The family has estimated their losses at $7M.

Shaundace Deane,  Chesney’s daughter, said around 10:30 yesterday they were a couple of houses away, when they were informed that their three-bedroom house was engulfed in flames.

“When we run in the fire was already in my mother room, coming to the front, we run up the front step but we couldn’t get in”, she recalled. According to Deane, no electrical appliance was on at the time. The woman, said that this is the third time a fire has erupted in her mother’s house. She said, “This is the third fire, March month me mother just wake up and come downstairs and five minutes later a mattress in she room catch a fire and nobody was in her room, in June we was at church on a Sunday a fire start in her room on her husband clothes”.

When Stabroek News arrived on the scene fire-fighters were working hard in an effort to contain and out the fire. An investigation has been launched into the incident.
