Bruising affair expected as Winners Connection take on GPF

The Victoria Community ground will come alive tonight when the semi-final round of the Mayor’s Cup football championships commences from 18:00hrs with Western Tigers tacking Ann’s Grove and Federal Winners Connection opposing the Guyana Police Force (GPF).

In the feature affair at 20:30hrs, Georgetown’s Western Tigers, will hope to continue their dominance when they oppose East Coast of Guyana representative Ann’s Grove.

They reached the semis by defeating Den Amstel and Eagles FC and in attack, the West Ruimveldt unit has scored a leading 14 goals.

Dwayne McLennon with five goals is the tournament’s leading scorer while Randolph Wagner has three.

Defensively, though, they have conceded four goals. Their opponent, Ann’s Grove, reached the semis with wins over Grove Hi-Tech and Cougars. Offensively, Ann’s Grove has scored three goals and has only conceded once.

The opening affair will pit Linden’s Winners Connection against the GPF in what promises to be a bruising affair.

The experienced Lindeners reached the last four by defeating Victoria Kings and Riddim Squad. Veteran marksman Rawle Gittens has scored all three goals recorded by the team. On the defensive end, Winners Connection are perfect as they have yet to be breached.

The improving GPF side has been the most balanced team in the event with six goals recorded against the likes of Camptown and Santos alongside a perfect record in the rearguard.

The winning team is set to receive $700,000 and the championship trophy compliments of Aruwai Resort while the runners-up will pocket $300,000 and the Ansa McAl trophy.

The third placed finisher will receive $200,000 and the John Fernandes trophy while the fourth placed unit will receive $100,000 and the Ministry of State trophy.

Additionally, the victorious side will receive hampers donated by Ricks and Sari while the event’s top scorer will receive a three-piece suite compliments of AH&L Kissoon’s Furniture Store.
