$200,000 bail for Cuyuni robbery accused

A 21-year-old man accused of stealing $105,000 has been granted bail of $200,000.

Steven Crandon appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman on Tuesday, where the charges read to him stated that on October 5, at Arangoi Landing, Cuyuni River, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Nurmala Matalin and stole $100,000 and US$25.

Crandon denied the allegation brought against him.

According to the prosecution, on the day in question, around 5 pm Matalin secured her home and went to exercise in the said building.  Upon returning some four hours later the complainant found her northern window broken and her bedroom ransacked.

Investigations were carried out and the defendant was arrested, the prosecution said. When questioned about the nature of the police investigation by the magistrate, the court heard that the defendant gave an oral statement admitting to the offence.

The defendant will return to court on October 25 for statements.
