Inmate charged over Sunday’s wounding at Camp St prison

Calvin Bailey, who was acquitted of murdering his 18-month-old toddler, but is serving time for another killing, was yesterday charged with wounding a prison inmate.

It is alleged that on November 6, at the Georgetown Prison, Camp Street, Bailey, 38, unlawfully and maliciously wounded, Dwayne King. Bailey pleaded not guilty to the charge that was read to him by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.

Police Prosecutor Neville Jeffers told the court that Bailey is currently serving a sentence in jail over another murder. He said the virtual complainant is also an inmate at the correctional facility. The prosecutor, who did not provide any facts about the matter, told the court that the police file was not completed as a statement was still outstanding.

Bailey later told the court that though he was serving a 15-year sentence for a murder, he does not understand what is going on. And as regards the present charge, he said the police were framing him.

The chief magistrate adjourned the matter until November 18.

Bailey had been cleared of the murder of 18-month-old Shaquan Nero after three trials.

The charge against Bailey was that on April 4, 2007, at Amelia’s Ward, Linden, he murdered Nero. He had pleaded not guilty. Bailey was alleged to have mortally injured the child while attacking his [Shaquan’s] mother and his then partner, Bernadette Nero.  He allegedly stabbed the child to death as he attacked Nero.

In 2008, Bailey along with four other inmates had to be taken to the hospital after a prison fight had broken out.
