Pregnant mother of six charged with stealing jewellery from employer

A pregnant mother of six was yesterday charged with the alleged theft of half a million dollars in gold jewellery from her employer.

It is alleged that between October 18th and November 8th, 2016, at Republic Park, East Bank Demerara, Christine Bharrat, 27, of Grove, East Bank Demerara, stole a gold ring, valued $200,000 and a gold chain, valued $300,000, from Peter Edwards.

Bharrat, a domestic worker, pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in a Georgetown court.

Bharrat’s lawyer Mark Conway argued that since his client is pregnant and has six children who depend on her, she should be given reasonable bail. Conway said that his client, who is willing to prove her innocence, is currently eight months pregnant. He noted that she had cooperated with the police in the matter.

Police prosecutor Neville Jeffers did not object to Bharrat being granted her release on bail. The Chief Magistrate subsequently set bail at $25,000 and adjourned the case until November 28th for statements.
