Timehri woman charged with stealing over $5M in jewellery from employer

A 38-year-old domestic worker who is accused of stealing over $5 million in jewellery from her employer was granted her release on bail yesterday after she denied the charge.

Surani Singh pleaded not guilty to the charge that between May 1st and June 11th, 2019 at Houston, East Bank Demerara, she stole a quantity of gold and diamond jewellery, valued $5,177,000, from Deowattie Singh.

The charge was read by Senior Magistrate Leron Daly at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court two.

According to Singh’s attorney Paula De Santos, her client, who is a mother of four of Lot 31 Timehri, East Bank Demerara, would have been subjected to a search by the security guard at her employer’s residence as is done with all employees who enter and exit the premises.

De Santos noted that that Singh is her family’s sole breadwinner.

With no objections by Police Prosecutor Sanj Singh, the accused was granted bail in the sum of $250,000 with the condition that she reports to the Ruimveldt Police Station every other Monday at 9 am. The matter was adjourned until July 26th, 2019.
