Shot fired as bandits snatch $2.5M on Main St

A Better Hope, East Coast Demerara businessman and his employee were yesterday afternoon robbed of $2.5M, moments after they had visited a city bank and were waiting on the traffic light in front of the Ministry of Finance on Main Street.

A senior police official confirmed the incident which occurred around 2pm. He said an investigation has since been launched into the matter and the police were up to yesterday afternoon working to obtain footage from the vicinity where the incident occurred.

According to reports reaching Stabroek News, the businessman and his employee had just visited Republic Bank’s, Water Street branch where they withdrew the money and were heading up the East Coast when the robbery occurred.

Information revealed that they were in a Toyota Hilux pickup awaiting the signal of the traffic light to proceed when the bandits, one of whom was armed, rode up in front of the vehicle and stopped.

One of the men jumped off of the motorcycle and attempted to open the door where the employee was seated.

However, after realizing that the door was locked the bandit whipped out a gun and fired a shot which shattered the glass of the window.

The bandit then grabbed the bag containing the money and jumped onto the motorcycle after which he and his accomplice escaped. The incident occurred in a matter of seconds.

One eyewitness related to this newspaper that he was seated in his car that was parked along Main Street having a conversation with a friend when they noticed the bandits speed past their vehicle.

“We saw how the guys were operating and my friend turn and told me that it look like a robbery and by time that we see everything as clear as light”, the man said.
