Man gets 18 months in jail after claiming he stole for family

An Alberttown man was on Thursday sentenced to 18 months in prison after pleading guilty to stealing 20 five-gallon bottles of water and a tarpaulin.

Rowall Ramsaywack

Rowall Ramsaywack, 31, told the courtroom of Magistrate Faith McGusty that he was unemployed during the time he committed the offence and needed money for his family.

It was heard that on December 1, at Albert Street, Ramsaywack stole the bottles of water valued at $43,000 and one tarpaulin worth $20,000, which was the property of Nicholas Coates.

The prosecution related that when the complainant returned to his business place, he discovered the items missing and viewed footage recorded by CCTV cameras. The footage showed Ramsaywack removing the articles from a delivery truck.

Ramsaywack told Magistrate McGusty that he sold each bottle of water for $1,000 and the tarpaulin for $3,000. He was subsequently sentenced.
