City Constable was stabbed when attackers tried to steal bike

On Tuesday evening, City Constable Ragland Williams, 52, was attacked at the Merriman Mall playground by two bandits, who stabbed him about his body in what he related were efforts to steal a bicycle.

He suffered chops to his hand and stab wounds to his shoulder and chest during the attack.

Williams, who has been stationed at the mall for approximately three months now, related that he was nearing the end of his shift when the attack occurred.

His guess was that the men entered the play park from Oronoque Street.

“So now I only had about 15 more minutes to wait, I decide to open the door and wait now to get my relief when two fella, they ain come through the gate, they use the side with the toilets and come and ease over the fence and when they near reach the hut they just rush in now and start firing juk at me and tell me now, “where’s the bicycle keys? Pass them keys.”

Williams stated that he told the men he did not have any keys as the bike did not belong to him, but to another security guard located at a hut at the other end of the park. “…trying to make my escape but them ain wan hear duh. And they start juking at me, juking at me, juking at me and the tumbling start. I manage to get out, and I go over at the corner and look for help.”

He recalled going over to some men who were equipped with cameras and relating to them what had just occurred. They later took him to the hospital.

Stabroek News photographer Keno George had been in the vicinity conducting a photo shoot with colleagues when he was approached by Williams.

George transported Williams to the hospital, after first reporting the incident to the Alberttown Police Station.
