When we disagree with the President we must do so respectfully

Dear Editor,

Guyanese have continuously disrespected the President since he was elected in May 2015. The disrespect can be seen all over social media. MP Nigel Dharamall uttered some distasteful and derogotary remarks on his Facebook page. That was one of many examples of utter disrespect and contempt for the President.

It is imperative that we respect the President whether we agree or disagree with his political views. Sasenarine Singh in a letter to the Kaieteur News also referred to the President in impermissable terms.

That is unacceptable from such an educated and intelligent young man. To honour our President does not mean we must agree with everything he says or does, or that we cannot speak out against the policies implemented by his government, but we must do so respectfully.  To honour our President does not mean we can’t express where we feel he is wrong, but we must do so respectfully.

We as Guyanese must respect each other regardless of political differences and differences of opinion. We must learn to engage in intellectual debates without assassinating and insulting the character of each other. One People, One Nation, One Destiny.

Yours faithfully,

Matthew Gaul
