‘Onion’ remanded over armed robbery at Arau

A Paradise resident was yesterday remanded to prison by a city magistrate after he denied committing an armed robbery in the interior.

The courtroom of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan heard that on August 22, at Arau Mountain Top, Essequibo River, Leon Blades also known as ‘Onion’, 27, of Paradise Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, while armed with a shotgun, robbed Joshua Mohammed of two cellular phones, two torchlights and one ounce of raw gold, totalling $284,000 in value. Blades, who stood in the prison docks unrepresented by an attorney, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones objected to bail being granted to Blades on the grounds that he gave the police two vague addresses as well as because of the gravity and nature of the offence and the fact that a gun was used to carry out the act.

Chief Magistrate McLennan subsequently remanded Blades to prison. His matter was adjourned until January 9 for statements.
