Unsavoury practices highlighted at draughts association AGM

A number of unsavoury practices were highlighted when the Guyana Draughts Association (GDA) held its Annual General meeting and awards ceremony last Saturday at 185 Waterloo Street, Georgetown.

According to a press release from the GDA, persons outside of the association are not only soliciting funds but are also staging private matches in contravention of the rules of the GDA.

ceremony of the Guyana Draughts association.

Coordinator of the association Paul D’Anjou advised that such practices must stop.

Additionally, it was also disclosed that the members of the GDA were delinquent in the payment of their monthly fees.

According to Charles Hetemeyer, Finance Secretary of the GDA, the situation whereby members were deficient in paying their monthly subscription had escalated.

Hetemeyer, leading from the front, duly paid his subscription for 2017, the release stated while urging other members to do likewise.

President of the GDA, Jiaram, gave a detailed report of activities for the year and also outlined plans for the new year.

Jairam said that persons desirous of staging activities must first form a club and register with the association. The registration fee and the monthly dues are $1000 each.

D’Anjou was given an award for his “tireless efforts in raising funds for the association” while Khemraj Pooranmall received an award for being the GDA’s Player of the Year.

Pooranmall won all five tournaments he contested during the year. Marilyn Ali, secretary of the GDA, was awarded for her performance as secretary while Jairam was rewarded for his astute leadership, the release stated.

Pooranmall was given a cash incentive while the other recipients received gifts, stated the release.
