Bandits break into Hardware Emporium, steal safe

During the wee hours of yesterday morning, bandits broke into the Hardware Emporium General Store located on Church Street, Georgetown and carted off a safe containing an undisclosed amount of cash.

Stabroek News understands that the men gained entry to the premises by scaling a fence which separates the store from Guyana Telephone and Telegraph (GTT) before cutting a hole in the metal wall of the building.

Once inside, they locked the door which houses the apartment of the caretaker and disconnected the power supply of the building which resulted in interruption of the recently installed security system and surveillance cameras. At the time of the incident, no security guard was on duty.

The hole the bandits cut in the metal wall to gain entry to the building.

Balwant Bhiachandeen, brother of the owner of the store, told reporters that he was informed of the incident when he received a call from the police yesterday morning.

As a result, he sent two persons to the scene and later joined them.

The incident, he said, has raised questions since new security systems were only recently installed.

A supervisor, who only gave his name as “Errol,” said he reported to work yesterday morning and on arrival saw a crowd including a number of police officers present.

Errol said he was told that the store had been broken into by bandits who made good their escape with an undisclosed amount of cash. He said that from all indications the bandits’ target appeared to be the office of the business.

Up to late yesterday afternoon no arrest had been made and investigations were ongoing.
