Mahaica man admits to drunk driving but denies resisting arrest, disorderly conduct

A Mahaica man was yesterday released on a total of $50,000 bail after he denied charges of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.

Anand Mohammed, 20, did, however, admit that he drove his car with his blood alcohol level exceeding the prescribed limit on January 25 on the Felicity Public Road and he was fined $7,500 by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.

At his arraignment, the court was told that Mohammed behaved in a disorderly manner and resisted his arrest by Police Constable McGarrel (only name given) on the same day.

Mohammed pleaded guilty to the driving under the influence charge but not guilty to the resisting arrest and the disorderly conduct charges.

The police prosecutor, who said investigations into the matters are still ongoing, had no objections to Mohammed being released on bail.

The magistrate subsequently ordered Mohammed to pay a fine of $7,500 for driving under the influence and set bail at $25,000 for each of the two charges that remain against him. Mohammed’s next hearing is scheduled for April 6, 2016.
