City residents reminded to conserve on water

Marked decreases in the level of water in the East Demerara Water Conservancy (EDWC) has resulted in the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) appealing to customers to use this resource conservatively.

In press releases, the GWI has been repeating its pleas to customers to adopt more sustainable water use practices by reiterating steps residents can take to conserve water.

The recommendations are particularly aimed at residents of Georgetown, who are served by the EDWC and as a result, have been experiencing low levels of water supply.

The entity has also been making special appeals to the heads and administrative staff of all schools, health facilities, hotels, food entities, and the like to efficiently manage their use of water.

GWI recommends that Georgetown residents:

Check all internal plumbing for leaks (including toilet cisterns, taps)

Reduce the amount of times in which you wash your car, equipment, etc with water provided by GWI,

Desist from washing concrete surfaces (such as your yard or bridge) with water provided by GWI,

Immediately install ‘float-valves’ in water tanks to prevent overflows

Contact GWI immediately to report leaks detected in your community on 227-8701, 227-8703 or 227-8704.

While residents are encouraged to play their part in the conservation effort, GWI stated that monitoring, in collaboration with the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA), is being done to develop mitigation measures to address the current situation.

It added that while citizens may experience a decrease in the levels of service provided, changes will not be made to the hours of delivery or the quality of service they receive.
