A driver was yesterday charged with causing the death of a pedal cyclist by dangerous driving.
It is alleged that on March 2nd, 2016, at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, Shaquille King, 25, the driver of a car, PRR 9087, struck and killed Devin Seenauth, who was riding his bike at the time.
King pleaded not guilty to the charge of causing death by dangerous driving after it was read to him by Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul at the Better Hope Community Centre, where hearings of the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court are temporarily being held.
According to police prosecutor David Goodridge, on the day in question, at around 1pm, Seenauth was riding his bike when King, who was driving at a speed, collided with him. The impact caused Seenauth to be pitched several meters away and he landed on the road, where he received several injuries. He was picked up by public-spirited persons and rushed immediately to the Georgetown Public Hospital by King. Seenauth later succumbed to his injuries, the prosecutor added.
King was subsequently granted bail in the amount of $250,000 by the magistrate, who set the next hearing for April 25.
