Prosecution closes case in Crum-Ewing murder inquiry

The prosecution yesterday closed its case in the preliminary inquiry (PI) into the charge against Regan Rodrigues, the man accused of murdering political activist Courtney Crum-Ewing.

Special prosecutor Nigel Hughes closed the prosecution’s case after the last prosecution witness, Woman Constable Elesia Browne. Browne, at the time of the murder, was attached to the Crime Scene Unit of the Criminal Investigation Department and had taken photographic evidence at the scene on the day of the murder.

Presiding Magistrate Judy Latchman adjourned the case until September 9, when attorney Adrian Thompson, who is representing Rodrigues, is expected to make his submissions.

Thompson had indicated to the court that he needed some time to go over testimonies and the names of the witnesses who were provided by the prosecution.

The defence attorney also indicated that he will be making oral submissions on the next assigned date.

Rodrigues was charged in August with the murder of Crum-Ewing, who was gunned down in Diamond, whilst urging persons to vote in the May 2015 general elections.

In January of this year, the accused was cleared of a charge which alleged that he was in possession of the gun reportedly linked to the murder, but was sentenced to three years in jail for escaping custody.

Magistrate Fabayo Azore had said at that time that the prosecution had failed to prove the elements of knowledge and possession of the firearm.

Nevertheless, the murder PI commenced a few weeks later before Magistrate Latchman.
