Mabaruma farmer charged over cocaine found in handbag

Mabaruma farmer was yesterday granted $170,000 bail by a city magistrate, for allegedly trafficking two grammes of cocaine on Christmas Day.

The courtroom of Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan heard that on December 25, at Mabaruma, Lawrence Joseph, 63, of Kumaka Village, Mabaruma, had in his possession two grammes of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking. Joseph, who was unrepresented by an attorney, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones did not object to the accused receiving substantial bail. Jones related to the court that the drugs were found in a handbag that belonged to Joseph.

Chief Magistrate McLennan granted bail to the accused and adjourned the matter until February 21, 2017 when it will be called at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court.
