Grove Hi Tech, individual winners receive prizes

Grove Hi Tech, winner of the recent second annual Stag Super XVI football competition and the standout individual performers were officially rewarded yesterday in the lobby of Ansa McAL’s Beterverwagting building.

Ansa McAL’s Public Relations Officer Darshanie Yussuf, presented the cash and trophies to the recipients.

Grove Hi Tech won the competition for the second year running while first runner’s up, Ann’s Grove, received the Fair Play award along with the second place winnings of $500,000.

Grove Hi Tech received $1.5 million their victory in the final on sudden death penalty kicks after the two teams were tied on four goals apiece at the end of the mandatory five kicks.

Victoria Kings had defeated Mahaica Determinators 4-3 on penalty kicks after a 1-1 draw at the end of regulation time in the third place playoff game. The Kings received $300,000 while Determinators got $200,000. All the cash prizes were accompanied by trophies.

The Most Valuable Player and Best Goalkeeper awards went to the Grove Hi Tech pair of defenders Lloyd and Michael Matthews respectively.

Junior Withrite and Esan Nelson of Beavers and Alden Lawrence of Victoria Kings were the joint highest goal scorers with three goals each. Officials and players of the top clubs journeyed to the company’s head office at Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara where they were presented with cash and trophies as a means of recognition for their sterling performances.

The competition, which was coordinated by the East Bank Football Association (EBFA) attracted teams from that association, the West Demerara Football Association and the East Demerara Football Association. In brief remarks, Yussuf pledged the company’s commitment to partner with the three associations for the staging of the third annual tournament this year. EBFA President, Franklin Wilson expressed gratitude to the management and staff of Ansa McAL Trading for the sponsorship of the event for the past two seasons.
