Cops awaiting advice on charges in teen labourer’s death

Investigations into the murder of Canal Number One teen Leon Anthony Ritchie who was stabbed over a $440 debt, are winding down and police are awaiting advice on the laying of charges, says Commander of ‘D’ Division, Leslie James.

Ritchie, 17, was reportedly stabbed to death on Tuesday by his 16-year-old cousin, marking the end of a two-week feud that was said to have stemmed from a falling out over a $440 loan.

It was stated that several attempts were made by the suspect to retrieve the money, which was loaned to Ritchie to buy food, but he refused, leading to the two ceasing communication about a week ago.

It was reported yesterday that Ritchie, of Lot 20 Canal Number One, West Bank Demerara, was stabbed once to the chest and was pronounced dead on arrival at the West Demerara Regional Hospital. A post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted today.

According to reports, on Tuesday evening, the suspect was alone at home when Ritchie entered his house with a jersey covering his face. Upon his entry, the suspect called out for Ritchie, who did not respond. The suspect then armed himself with a knife and inflicted a single stab wound to the chest of Ritchie, who collapsed.

The suspect then picked up his bicycle and rode to a nearby shop, where he met his uncle and told him what had transpired. The uncle rushed to the scene and transported Ritchie to the hospital, but he died before they arrived.
