Albouystown health centre being used for illicit activities – city councillors

While the restoration of the Albouystown Health Centre remains incomplete, city councilors have voiced concern over the structure being used for illicit activities.

At a statutory council meeting on Monday, constituency representative Malcolm Ferreira said the building is being used for unintended purposes and called on the Mayor and City Council (M&CC) to quickly complete the repairs.

The M&CC began rehabilitation works last year March. The works were pegged at $3 million and were expected to be completed in May. However, with City Hall being cash strapped, the works were not completed.

Both Ferreira and fellow councillor Heston Bostwick, who reside in the Albouystown/Charlestown community, said they received reports from members of the community indicating that the building was being used as a motel for sex.

Ferreira said that he would like to see the building completed for residents to benefit from it services.

Mayor Patricia Chase-Green said that on several occasions when she would have driven through the constituency, she would have noticed the unoccupied building being used as a liming spot by persons. She added that she has noticed persons consuming alcohol and vehicles parked outside and playing loud music.

She also acknowledged that the completion of the health centre is necessary since it would be a burdensome for persons who are sick or pregnant to leave the constituency and seek services elsewhere.

The mayor said she would like to see the building completed by February month end and become operational to provide services to the community.
