Three years for West Ruimveldt man for break and enter

A West Ruimveldt resident was on Wednesday sentenced to three years behind bars after a city magistrate found him guilty of breaking and entering the house of another and stealing home appliances.

Carlos Brathwaite, 36, was handed a guilty verdict by Magistrate Faith McGusty, at the end of his break and enter matter.

Brathwaite, on January 16, at Cummings Street, Georgetown, broke and entered the home of Hemchandra Kissoon and stole a Sharp TV, valued at $69,000, an iron and a DVD Player, valued at $14,000.

Magistrate McGusty in her ruling noted that the court relied on the evidence of the witnesses who testified against the defendant, since the defendant refused to give evidence on his own behalf. The magistrate further added that that the police prosecutor brought a strong case against the accused, and as such she found the defendant guilty.

The Prosecutor’s case was that on January 15, Kissoon secured her home, and retired to bed along with her children. During the night, however, she awoke to a noise coming from her living room and when she got up and ventured out of her bedroom, she noticed Brathwaite in her house. The prosecutor said that Kissoon gathered her children and ran over to the home of a neighbour, who is a police officer. Brathwaite was later captured by the police.

The magistrate after her ruling on Wednesday, sentenced the accused to three years in prison.
