Bandit fatally shot by guard during attack on GuyGas complex

A security guard at the GuyGas Inc complex at Land of Canaan, East Bank Demerara, shot and killed one of three men who were attempting to rob the business during the wee hours of yesterday morning.

Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum confirmed the fatal shooting and he said when the police returned to the scene around 5.35am they discovered the body of the dead man in a clump of bushes behind the fence of the GuyGas property.

The man, who was shot twice to his head and chest, was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor. His body was taken to the Lyken Funeral Parlour and up to late yesterday afternoon he remained unidentified.

The man was dressed in grey pants and a black t-shirt. There was also a hood covering his face at the time his body was found.

Blanhum said the security guard was questioned and is assisting the police with their investigation.

Stabroek News was told that the security guard was stationed in his observation post, which towers over the rear of the compound, when he saw the three bandits scale the fence.

The men reportedly proceeded to the observation post and attempted to cut a cord for a ladder the guard used to exit. However, the security guard, who was armed with a shotgun, discharged several rounds in their direction. As two of the bandits escaped, the other reportedly opened fire at the security guard, who discharged several more rounds in his direction.

The episode was reported to the police, who responded but were unable to locate any of the bandits. They returned at daylight to obtain statements and to conduct further investigations when the body of the shot bandit was found.

When this newspaper arrived at the scene yesterday, the security guard on duty was tightlipped about the shooting. He directed questions to the police.
