Ms Sagar is the one I would select

Dear Editor,

The new list of nominees for chairperson of GECOM is a better one.  It is more thoughtful; it is less crafty.  This is where and for whom I stand.

The president wanted, insisted on, a judge.  Well, the opposition went one better: it presented him with two.  Also, two in the current list can be struck off immediately as non-starters for one good reason or another.  Then, there are issues of age and well-being which could rule out another two.  This leaves four in the mix.

I should mention that one of the nominees and I went to school way back yonder; further, I shared classes with his daughter.  I met one of the nominees once, only once.  That would be Ms. Nadia Sagar, Attorney-at-Law.   On the basis of a very short exchange I now step forward to endorse the nomination of Ms. Sagar.  She is the one I urge the president to name.  I firmly believe that Ms. Sagar has what it takes to deliver on a very sensitive platform and in a grueling calling.  She is the one I would select for this position.

Editor, here is why.  Several years ago, Ms. Sagar had the courage, and the conviction, and the innate decency to step forward, to shake my hand, and to say words to the effect of: “Mr. Lall, I am sorry for how you were treated.”  This bright young woman was brave enough to attempt to undo some damage, in her quiet understated way.  I understand that she is also a remigrant.  The chief source of the damage was a man whose name is occasionally kicked around for leadership of this country.  It was a man supremely conscious of the possible consequences of making a hard decision, but a principled one.  He went with the other way.  I leave the rest unsaid.

For Ms. Sagar to break ranks there and back then informs me of the calibre of a character that is energizing, and which I believe that this society so desperately needs.  I foresee that, in the hard traditional crucible of national elections, Ms. Sagar can come to represent an opportunity for strength and credibility, when such are needed most.  I think she will do well.  For all these reasons and more, I say that she is the one.

Yours faithfully,

GHK Lall
