Miner remanded over one pound of cannabis

Charged with being in possession of one pound of cannabis, a miner was yesterday remanded to prison.

Junior Stephens, 31, is alleged to have had in his possession 554 grammes of cannabis (equivalent to 1.2 pounds) for trafficking, on June 11, at Fifth Avenue, Bartica.

Stephens pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read by Magistrate Judy Latchman.

According to the facts presented by Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves, on the day in question Sergeant English, who is stationed at the Bartica Police Station, while in an unmarked vehicle, observed the defendant with a red bulky bag in his hand. The prosecutor said that the Sergeant, while awaiting the arrival of ranks, observed the defendant stashing the bag. Sometime after the defendant was approached, the bag was retrieved by the police and searched in the presence of the defendant. During the search the police found the alleged illicit substance.

Stephens was remanded to prison, and will make his next court appearance on June 27, before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan.
