Thirty-nine-year-old Ulric Lambert, a miner of Grove Squatting Area, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with having 739.6 grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.

The defendant made his appearance at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Crystal Lambert who read the charge to him. He pleaded not guilty but bail was refused and as such he was remanded to prison. The matter was then adjourned until April 11.

According to the police, Lambert was nabbed on Sunday at Sewanda Backdam by a police patrol which was conducting an operation between Sewanda and Turtle Creek backdams. Whilst in Sewanda Backdam, the ranks approached a shop where they observed Lambert standing beside the shop and attempting to dispose of a purple haversack that was on the ground.

This prompted the ranks to examine the bag and upon doing so, they found 22 transparent parcels containing leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis. Lambert was then taken to the closest police station along with the narcotics which was weighed and amounted to 739.6 grammes.
