Guards charged after school hut scuffle

Two women security guards, who reportedly assaulted each other in a school’s guard hut were yesterday charged, with one being granted bail and an arrest warrant being issued for the other.

Paula Gill of Laing Avenue was read a charge which stated that on June 15, at Charlestown Secondary School, she unlawfully assaulted Surswattie Latchan, so as to cause her actual bodily harm.

Gill originally pleaded guilty to the charge, but her plea was changed to not guilty, after she told the court that Latchan had hit her first.

According to Prosecutor Shawn Gonsalves, Gill and Latchan were on duty when Gill told Latchan to clean the guard hut. An argument ensued, leading to a scuffle between the two. As a result of the scuffle Latchan sustained minor injuries.

Subsequently, Magistrate Judy Latchman granted the accused $60,000 bail and adjourned the matter to June 26.

An arrest warrant was issued for Latchan, who had been similarly charged, but did not appear in court.
