Mocha miner accused of robbery with violence

A miner was yesterday granted his release on $100,000 bail after he denied a robbery with violence charge.

Nigel Wellington, 33, of Lot 1 Mocha, East Bank Demerara, appeared before city magistrate Faith McGusty.

It was alleged that on July 5, at Tucville, Georgetown, he robbed Esther Gittens of a cellphone, two gold rings, US$75 and $4,000 in cash, all having a total value of $160,000, and immediately before or afterwards, he used personal violence.

Wellington pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Although Police Prosecutor Inspector Stephen Telford had no objections to bail, he requested that it be a substantial sum. He added that the accused must report to Constable Watson every Friday at the East La Penitence Police Station.

Magistrate McGusty subsequently set bail at $100,000 and ordered that Wellington report every Friday to the East La Penitence Police Station.

The matter was adjourned until August 7.
