WDFA, GFA clinch semi-final spots

Undefeated West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) and the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) clinched semi-final berths in the Upper Demerara Football Association (UDFA)/GT Beer Intra-Association tournament Sunday.

WDFA downed Bartica Football Association 3-1 at the Mackenzie Sports Club (MSC) ground, Linden. Kevaughn Ward opened the scoring in the 21st minute.

Racing onto a through pass from Marvin Frank, Ward dribbled two defenders inside the left of the box before rounding the advancing goalkeeper and finishing into the empty net.

WDFA Scorers from left to right-Kevaughn Ward, Daniel Blake and Jamal Pereira.
GFA Scorers from left to right-Quason McAulay, Darren Benjamin and Shane Morris.

Daniel Blake doubled the lead two minutes later in spectacular fashion, uncorking a thunderous right volley from the top of the 18-yard area into the back of the net, giving the custodian no chance.

Bartica eventually pulled one back in the 53rd minute as a hopeful attempt from the right side of the field sailed inexplicably over the grasp of the goalkeeper and into the top right hand corner.

Nevertheless, WDFA sealed the result seven minutes later with Jamal Pereira scoring. Latching onto a pass from Daniel Floy, Pereira dribbled the onrushing goalkeeper inside the area and slotted home into the back of the net. Meanwhile, GFA brushed aside Berbice Football Association 3-0 in a reduced, 70-minute affair. Quason McAulay broke the deadlock in the ninth minute, pouncing onto a botched attempt at a punched clearance by the goalkeeper, before finishing into the net.

Darren Benjamin made it 2-0 in the 33rd minute, slotting home from inside the penalty area, after collecting a squared pass.

The third and final goal came in the 39th minute when Shane Morris scored, hammering a powerful right foot strike into the right side, following a pass from Samuel Hunte.

The event resumes September 17th with the semifinal round at the same venue. GFA will tackle UDFA while WDFA will engage Essequibo/Pomeroon Football Association. The grand finale will be staged on September 24th.
