Going for Gold!

Guyana’s contingent of athletes and officials departed yesterday on a quest to secure medals at the second edition of the South American Youth Championships which kicks off tomorrow in Santiago, Chile.

The championships which involves 14 competing countries, will see Guyana’s athletes going for gold in the sports of boxing, basketball (3×3), track and field, badminton and table tennis.

Boxing starts on September 30, badminton starts three days later followed by table tennis on October 4, while basketball bounces off on October 5. The track and field athletes will bring the curtain down on the Games from October 6-8.

Guyana’s representatives at the Games which concludes on October 8 are: Kenisha Phillips, Analisa Barclay, Deshanna Skeete and Jermaine King – athletics, Keevin Allicock and Christopher Moore- boxing, Shamar France, Akeem Crandon, Isaiah Hintzen and Nigel Bowen- basketball and  Miguel Wong and Nicholas Romain – table tennis.

GOA vice-president Godfrey Munroe is the Chef-de-Mission while Director of Sport, Christopher Jones is expected to attend the Games in place of GOA president K.A Juman Yassin. The other officials are Wanda Richmond, athletics, Junior Hercules, basketball, Poole – boxing and Idi Lewis – table tennis.

The games are held every four years consistent with the current Olympic Games format. The first edition was held in Lima, Perú, from 20 to 29 September 2013.
